This famous athlete began his sports career after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. When his enlistment ended, he signed with the Philadelphia Athletics as a pitcher, but Bowling was his real passion. He was one of the founding members of the PBA and also served as President of the PBA twice. The first PBA tournament ever named after a bowler proudly carried this Bowling pioneer’s name.
His Bowling achievements led to his induction into the both the PBA Hall of Fame and the USBC Hall of Fame. They include winning every Major tournament, and even being the first bowler to win ALL of the Majors and to win Bowling’s Grand Slam. He bowled the first ever televised 800 series and became so popular and well known that he was the first professional athlete from ANY sport to sign a $1,000,000 endorsement contract.
