Re: HEAVY OIL BALL

With that arsenal, my first thought is, how are they drilled?
Can you post some pics of the balls and maybe a video of you bowling so we can properly analyze?

On the other hand, a Dynamo will hook on ice, no matter how you drill it!

Now, this will seem like a dumb question, but you are kind of contradicting yourself. Do you prefer to play the outside line or do you prefer to belly it out? Those are two totally different lines.
For instance, where are you targeting on the lane? First arrow? Second arrow? Do you play straight up the first arrow or do you target the third arrow and look for the breakpoint around 40 feet? Deep inside to me is fourth arrow or more and generally requires a LOT of hand and speed to use regularly. Also, if everything you have is drilled pretty much the same, do they all have different breakpoint shapes and locations?
Seems silly, but without a video, answers will help diagnose where any problems lie.

OK, good. Lots of folks struggle with heavy oil. Don't feel alone here!
Generally, IF I ever run into truly heavy oil, I will take my most controled drilling, usually a short pin stacked, and just move the ball out to the 5 board, (first arrow), and TRY to come straight up the back with slower ball speed. Also found on the old PBA Pattern "D", an aggressively drilld, dull reactive, played inside with extreme revs, (like 18-15 and 500-600rpm) worked pretty good. I think "D" became Shark. Not sure there.
Anyway, oil patterns don't necessarily require a special ball, just requires the bowler to get out of the "stand left, throw right" mindset. Lots of really good local bowlers struggle when facing anything other than a typical house shot. They are called house hacks!
But, if you want something specifically for heavy oil, with the existing release and style you have right now, I would strongly recommend a Lane #1 Dynamo with a drill pattern different than what you have now.

I second what Phatdon says, kudos to Don for the responses!

On a true heavy oil shot, you cannot stand left and throw right. Move your feet to the right and throw straighter up the lane.

The first time I bowled on the Shark I was playing straight up the ten board and crushing the pocket and everyone around me was trying to swing the ball and leaving wash outs. They could not understand how "I was hooking the ball so much". I laughed and told them I was not hooking the ball, just trying to hit the pocket. I explained that I was just going straighter up the lane then they were and they did not understand and struggled the whole time. While it may have appeared I was hooking the ball, I was just playing the lanes the way I needed to, it was not pretty, but it was effective.

The biggest challenge for you is to figure out for your game, where to stand and where to target the ball on the lane. Sometimes this means playing outside of your comfort zone (going straighter up the lane for example), but it can be rewarding when you figure things out.

Good luck, keep an open mind and you will do fine!
